of fiction and nonfiction, including novels, stories, children’s books
and memoirs.
Proposals: The conference committee invites
250-word proposals for 15- to 20-minute individual presentations and 3-
to 4-member panels on the theme of “Writing from the Center” that might
touch on the following topics:
• Where does good writing come from and where does it go?
• Mainstream versus periphery or alternative writing
• The Web as a centering or de-centering force
• Writing Centers: development and administration
• Writing as therapy: boundaries in the classroom
• Techniques for “centering” (yoga, meditation, etc.) and their relation to writing
• Technical and professional writing’s place in the academy
• Elementary, middle, and secondary education writing pedagogy
• Making the most of regional resources: archives, local history, oral history, etc.
• Creative writing, especially creative nonfiction, the essay and children’s literature
• Dual enrollment programs in Louisiana colleges and high schools
• Other issues that encourage excellence in the teaching and study of writing
Roundtable
Discussion 1—Dual Enrollment: The Early Start dual enrollment program
in Louisiana focuses on offering college courses in high school
settings. We invite secondary teachers, college instructors, and
administrators to discuss the promises, challenges, and results of this
state-mandated program.
Roundtable Discussion 2—Writing
Centers: A vital campus writing center indicates that a school takes
writing seriously. What do writing centers look like? Whom do they
serve? How do they reach out to serve their clientele? We invite
panelists to explore the centrality of writing centers.
